Hawaii Island police arrested 22 motorists for allegedly driving under the influence of an intoxicant between April 6 and Sunday. Seven of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes and one was younger than age 21.
Hawaii Island police arrested 22 motorists for allegedly driving under the influence of an intoxicant between April 6 and Sunday. Seven of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes and one was younger than age 21.
So far this year, there have been 271 DUI arrests compared with 376 during the same period last year, a decrease of 27.9 percent, according to the Hawaii Police Department.
Kona officers arrested nine motorists while eight motorists were arrested by South Hilo officers, according to police. Officers in South Kohala and Puna arrested two motorists in each district while one driver was arrested in Ka‘u.
There have been 395 major accidents so far this year compared with 472 during the same period last year, a decrease of 16.3 percent.
So far this year, there have been seven traffic fatalities on Hawaii County public roadways compared with four during the same period last year, an increase of 75 percent. To date, four fatalities were related to drugs.
